Academic staff

I am the Associate Dean, Quality and Student Experience across the Institute of Health and Social Care having previously been the Director of Education and Student experience.

I have years of experience working in the Institute and University. I have a clear understanding of the issues related to academic enhancement, student retention and success and, since 2010, I have provided leadership to all staff in the Institute / School of Health and Social Care and have developed policies and procedures to provide a link between the University level guidance and the Institute’s complex and variable academic environment and context.

I inspired staff in the development of technology enhanced learning and innovative teaching in Allied Health courses and currently have oversight of the cross-Institute staff leading on Skills and Simulation and Digital Support in Learning and Teaching. I have a clear understanding of conceptual areas of quality assurance, academic regulation, external benchmarks, influencing agencies and regulatory complexities of other professional and academic areas. I ensured compliance with academic quality processes and external professional body and Oftsed requirements through validation, revalidation and monitoring of courses within the Institute and, in my capacity as chair, of validation and revalidation of many courses across the University.

I am a therapeutic radiographer by professional background who has always had an interest in academic quality issues and student experience. Over the past twenty years I have had an impact nationally and internationally in relation to Radiography Education being an external advisor or external examiner across eight Universities. This experience enabled me to appreciate the importance of teaching and learning to the student experience across the sector to recognise developing trends and positively influence curriculum development. I was awarded Fellowship of the College of Radiographers (FCR); an honour bestowed on members of the profession who have made major contribution to the profession of radiography, clinical and educational through peer review of professional journals and acting as a validator on behalf of the College of Radiographers, most recently for the Apprenticeship provision at University West of England and Birmingham City University. I participated in the Open University Periodic Quality Review (PQR) of Health and Social Care in May 2022. I sat on the IHSC Ethics committee for many years and in 2015 I participated in a qualitative case study evaluation of Health care staff perceptions of a coaching and mentoring programme. In 2017, I undertook research into the impact of the calculation algorithm on degree classifications and in 2020 participated in a mixed method study of the Role and Development of Advanced Clinical Practice within Allied Health Professions.
