I am Professor of Sociology in the Division of Social Sciences and the Co-Director of the Social Justice and Global Responsibility Research Centre in the School of Law and Social Sciences. I was the LSS Interim Director of Research from June 2021-January 2022, and am the Chair of the School Ethics Panel. I am the School's EDI Lead and I co-lead the Race, Gender and Sexualities Research Group. As the Chair of the equality network for BAME staff and Allies, EquiNet (2012-2022), I am a member of the SAT Team for the Race Equality Charter Mark.
My research interests and publications are centred around race, gender, sexuality, education and social justice. I am the sole author of Gender, Ethnicity and Political Agency (Routledge) and my interest in global gender equality, rights and women’s activism has led to an edited book, Gender and Race Matter (Emerald). I have also researched minority ethnic women’s experiences of higher education and local politics (British Academy funded), religion, sexuality and human rights, and emotions in research. My current research is focused on social movements such as #BLM, the racial awarding gap, and decolonising the curriculum. I have recently developed LSBU's Decolonising the Curriculum website. I have sat as a Commissioner on the Local Government Commission (Fawcett Society and LGIU) and the Lambeth Equality Commission.
