Professor of Sonic Culture since 2014, I joined the university in 1997, where I am Chair of its Professoriate and Co-Director of the Creative Technologies Research Centre (CTRC). My research address electronic dance music culture, as well as cognate forms of electronic music, including game music, while my postgraduate research students investigate and consider issues in nascent creative technologies, music cultures, and sound studies. During the REF 2021, my publications were rated world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*).

The Creative Technologies Research Centre (CTRC) is co-directed with Prof Lizzie Jackson to advance research and enterprise in the areas of film, digital production, video games, sound and music. Previously, as Chair of Sonic Research Group (SRG), I brought together academic staff and postgraduate research students to engage in the concepts, cultures, creative practices and technologies of sound and music, and to nurture research in this field across the spectrum of academic engagement.

In addition to my publication work, I have coedited a collection for Bloomsbury Academic, 'DJ Culture in the Mix: Power, Technology, and Social Change in Electronic Dance Music', as well as a special issue on dub diasporas for 'Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture'. In addtion, I have coedited a special issue on game music for 'GAME: The Italian Journal of Game Studies', as well as a recent special issue on game and electronic dance music synergies for 'Journal of Sound and Music in Games'.

Between 2011-17, I led the editorial team of 'IASPM Journal', the open-access online journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM). I am also member of the Advisory Board of 'Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music', 'IASPM Journal', and 'Cambridge University Press Elements in Popular Music'. I regularly peer review in the fields of sound and music studies for a range of academic journals and publishers (including Routledge, Bloomsbury Academic, Edinburgh UP, Temple UP, Emerald), and between 2007-14 I was member of the review council for the AHRC. I also advise externally on postgraduate research, course (re)validations, and academic staff recruitment.

I am a member of British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE); British Sociological Association (BSA); Media, Communications & Cultural Studies Association (MeCCSA); Society for the Study of Sound andMusic in Games (SSSMG); as well as PRS for Music, and Authors' Licensing & Collecting Society (ALCS).

In 2004 I initiated successful course provision in music and sound design at London South Bank University, to which I still contribute significantly. I passionately care about research-led teaching, and am Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

My graduates and postgraduate researchers successfully go on to gain careers in the creative industries, including music production, music performance, sound art, music copyright management, music marketing, music management, music technology, game development, or follow academic careers in digital technologies, industries, and humanities.

The British Pop Archive (BPA) is a dynamic series of short books published by Manchester University Press.

Drawing on a rich variety of sources including interviews, memoirs, recordings, images, press cuttings and other archival materials, the books will reflect and expand the Manchester-based British Pop Archive, which recently launched to much acclaim.

Telling untold stories from music, popular (and unpopular) culture and counterculture, the books will entertain and inform. At the same time, they will bring the archivist’s joy of uncovering long-hidden secrets and delving into dusty corners to an audience of retro culture vultures, music buffs and curious souls.

Working with an award-winning cover designer, we will be producing collectible, desirable volumes that every music-loving and pop-cultural enthusiast book-buyer will want to add to their own personal archive.
