I have a BEng Civil Engineering, MSc Civil Engineering Structures and PhD Nonlinear Mechanics.

I am a lecturer in the School of Engineering; I am the module leader for Engineering Mathematics and Modelling, a module taken by all first year BEng/MEng engineering students. I also lead on Mathematics, Structural Mechanics and Geotechnics and Materials modules on our Rail Apprentice course.

Since 2017 I have been involved in MMEAW (Modelling the Mechanics and Engineering Applications of Animal Whiskers), a multidisciplinary research project involving animal behaviourists and mechanics.

My research area is on the large deformations of elastic rods, generally the geometrically exact description and analysis of slender structures:

• Nonlinear mechanics of slender elastic structures: post-buckling behaviour, large deformations, statical and dynamical stability, bifurcation, constrained deformation (self-contact and surface contact), interaction, discontinuities (kinks), writhing, whirling. Applications both in engineering (pipe lay, twisted cables), space tethers, drill strings, wire rope, rotated and transported textile yarn, nanotube junctions) and in biology (vibrissae).

• Computational (numerical as well as analytical) dynamical systems: normal forms, (homoclinic) bifurcations

• Numerical continuation and bifurcation analysis, computer software (AUTO- AUTO-07P:CONTINUATION AND BIFURCATION SOFTWARE FOR ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

• Stability theory
