I joined London South Bank University (LSBU) in September 2017, as Professor of Sustainability and Environmental Law in the School of the Built Environment and Architecture (BEA), Director of Internationalisation and Marketing, and Director of the Centre for Integrated Delivery of the Built Environment. Prior to this, I was a Reader in Energy, Sustainability, and Development at De Montfort University in Leicester and Director of the Developing World Built Environments Research Unit. I hold a BA in Economics from Staffordshire University, a Masters in Development Economics and a PhD in Energy and Development Economics from the University of Leicester.
My research interests and expertise span across many themes and perspectives, including energy, sustainability and development in the context of the built and natural environments, with particular on the developing countries. Current focus is on the challenges of mainstreaming sustainability into built environment policies and strategies to enhance equality of access and outcome of urban opportunities to deliver 21st century sustainable cities. I have published widely in leading journals, contributed book chapters, and supervised and examined over 30 PhD students locally and internationally on various built environment themes and perspectives.
Am actively engaged externally, offering my expertise on demands to unilateral and multilateral organisations, including many in the 'Third sector' on energy, sustainability and development. I was commissioned in 2012 by United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) to produce Chapter 2.5 - Environmental Prosperity of Cities for the 2012/2013 State of the World’s Cities Report: Prosperity of Cities; I was appointed to the international advisory board of UN-Habitat in 2013 to date. In this role, I have actively participated in the production of two major global reports on the State of World Cities, the latest being the World Cities Report 2022: Envisaging the Future of Cities.
I also serve on the Sustainability Expert Advisory Group for two London authorities - Lambert and Southwark Councils. In these roles, I actively participated with colleagues on the board to advise on establishing 'Citizens’ Jury on Climate Change' to shape strategic policy response to Climate Emergency and achieve net-zero carbon emissions. I'm also the current Chairman of the International Advisory Board of GreenHubAfrica (https://greenhubafrica.com/), and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
