I have worked in the UK construction industry since 1978.Initially I was employed as a building labourer for five years when I left school before I decided to become a construction professional and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Building Surveyor, a Chartered Building Engineer and a Chartered Construction Manager. I have held a number of senior positions within the UK construction industry including being the managing director of a specialist dispute resolution chartered building surveying practice and an executive board member of a major social housing landlord organisation.
I have extensive experience of the professional work undertaken by building surveyors including; contract administration, project management, pre-acquisition surveys for commercial and residential buildings, defect analysis, party wall surveying and preparing/negotiating schedules of dilapidations. I have acted as a chartered building surveying consultant to many organisations within both the public and private sector including; London & Quadrant Housing Association, Forest Homes, Swan Housing Association, Martin Arnold Chartered Surveyors, REIT Property Management , Watts Property Consultants, SERCO, Capita and the London Borough of Islington. I have also provided expert witness evidence on major works service charge disputes to the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal, various Arbitration Tribunals and sat on the Government Working Party which amended the Service Charge Consultation Regulations in 2003.
After completing an Engineering Doctorate (with no corrections) at Loughborough University and a MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development at Cambridge University I became the Course Director for BSc(Hons) and MSc Building Surveying Degree courses at London South Bank University. My research interests include; Digital Technology & Surveying, the Sustainable Adaptive Re-use of Buildings, Fire Safety & The Golden Thread of Building Information, Best Value Procurement and Uncertainty in Passivhaus Design.
I sit on the editorial board of the Journal of Building Survey, Appraisal & Valuation and I'm a reviewer for a number of other academic journals. I am also a RICS APC Assessor on the Building Surveying Pathway and I am an External Examiner in Building Surveying at the University of West London and Salford University
