I am a lecturer in Criminology in the Division of Social Sciences and joined LSBU four years ago. I currently teach a number of modules including Policing and Society (Level 5) and Deconstructing the Crime Problem (Level 4).
My research focuses on collaborating with communities whose voices are ignored, notably in my research exploring the attitudes and identities of young male Muslim ex-prisoners. This group has been historically overlooked in the discipline of Criminology. My research reveals lived experiences detailing significant conflict and exclusionary practices experienced within pre-prison space that demonstrate the importance of understanding the linearity of prison experiences. My research is founded on the need to build trust and collaboration with individuals and communities and a need to counter the essentialisation that often informs the ‘othering’ of groups in society.
Prior to this research focus, I examined the role of Republican prisoners in the Northern Ireland peace process of 1998.
In other research, I have just completed a joint study funded by the British Academy examining the importance of collective voices in achieving Net Zero, positioned to overlook the impact of BAME communities and environmental practices. I am also collaborating with other academics on determining the causes and influences of the criminalization of activism, positioned to the fragility of capitalism and the post-Brexit UK.
