Catarina Marques is a Senior Research Fellow at LSBU with 15 years’ experience working on funded research projects in refrigeration, district heating and cooling, food and thermal storage materials. Catarina has worked simultaneously in industry and academia through an industrial CASE award PhD and two knowledge transfer partnerships between LSBU and Adande Refrigeration. She won an Innovate UK business leader of the Future award and managed Adande’s Engineering department leading the development of award-winning products. Catarina is the president of Careers in Refrigeration a working group from the International Institute of Refrigeration and a fellow of the Institute of Refrigeration.
Catarina has published four papers and sixteen conference papers covering a wide range of topics from food science to refrigeration, acoustics, district heating and cooling and smart local energy systems (SLES). She is the Project Manager for GreenSCIES, a SLES that integrates heat (ambient loop district heating and cooling network), renewable power (solar PV) and low carbon mobility (electric vehicles and vehicle-to-grid). Catarina is involved in the Bankenergi project, which is developing an end-to-end energy-trading platform. She is also developing a techno-economic model for DeltaPhi, a project that is investigating the decarbonisation of low temperature process heat industry.
Catarina completed her PhD at London South Bank University in 2012, on the novel design and performance enhancement of domestic refrigerators with thermal storage. This research was awarded the Ted Perry award by the Institute of Refrigeration in 2012. She worked in the refrigeration industry from 2006 to 2018 and maintained strong bonds with academia, completing an industrial CASE award PhD and two knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) over this period. The first KTP was on acoustics, reducing the noise of a commercial refrigerator. In the second KTP Catarina developed a novel chilling and tempering cabinet capable of both chill and rapidly warm up food ingredients. Due to this successful project, Catarina won the 2015 Business Leader of the Future award, from Innovate UK. Catarina led the Engineering department of Adande Refrigeration for 3 years, overseeing the design, testing and certification of the Adande products for the UK and international markets, developing award-winning products.
Catarina is the president Careers in Refrigeration (CaRe) a working group from the International Institute of Refrigeration that aims to make refrigeration more visible to the public and inspire a young generation to join this field. Since CaRe inception in 2016, Catarina has organised eight networking events at international conferences in Europe, Asia, the US, Canada and New Zealand.
Catarina is a Fellow of the Institute of Refrigeration and a member of the following IOR committees:
- Women in RACHP: provides mentoring, networking and learning opportunities to women working the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pumps industry.
- Papers and Publications: carries out peer reviews of papers published in the IOR proceedings.
- SIRACH planning group: organises workshops on the topics of refrigeration, heating technology, energy storage, and end-user energy demand.
In 2019, Catarina became a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Food and Drink committee.

- Responsible for a team of five design and test engineers in the development of new products using the Adande refrigerated drawer patented technology.
- Coordinated in-house and third party testing of all Adande products to meet EU regulations for professional cabinets on ecodesign, energy labelling, F-Gas.
- Developed an A+ rated professional refrigerator, which won the 2017 Refrigeration Product of the Year at the UK National ACR Awards.
- Managed certification projects on product safety according to specific market requirements in particular UL and NSF for the USA, CB scheme and CCC for China.
- Managed and coordinated trials with universities, consultants and food manufacturers.
- Developed a novel Tempering cabinet, which had the ability to both chill and temper food ingredients. The cabinet provided controlled ingredient tempering times, delivering warmer sandwiches and reducing customer complaints for a major restaurant chain.
- Developed an analysis tool that identifies products with greater return on investment and introduced a stage-gate process for new product development to guide decision-making
- Benchmarked the Adande refrigerator sound power, diagnosed the noise and vibration sources and evaluated and enhanced the sound quality.
- Designed refrigeration systems, tested new components (VIPs, variable speed compressors, etc.), provided support to production and training to development staff.
