I am Professor of Art and Computational Culture at LSBU, where I am also co-Director of Centre for the Study of the Networked Image (CSNI), and co-Director of MA Curating Art and Public Programmes (with Whitechapel Gallery). Previously I worked at University of Plymouth, where I did my PhD (2006), and Aarhus University (2010-), where I retain an adjunct position; and curatorial positions at Camerawork in Education/Outreach (1994-98) and Arnolfini as adjunct for online projects (2008-13). I have held Visiting Scholar positions at the Computer Lab, University of Cambridge (2016), and Digital Visual Studies, Max Planck/University of Zurich (2022).

My research interests lie broadly across the fields of software studies, contemporary art, and publishing as an aesthetic medium.

Published books include Speaking Code: coding as aesthetic and political expression (with Alex McLean) published by MIT Press in 2013, Aesthetic Programming: A Handbook of Software Studies (with Winnie Soon) published by Open Humanities Press in 2020, and the multi-authored book project Live Coding: A User's Manual (with Alan Blackwell, Emma Cocker, Thor Magnusson, Alex McLean) published by MIT Press in 2022. I am an advisor for the online journal Computational Culture and AI in Society and Culture, an initiative of Oxford University Press.

As one outcome of The Contemporary Condition research project (co-PI, funded by Danish Research Foundation), I published The Contemporary Condition: Introductory Thoughts on Contemporaneity and Contemporary Art (with Jacob Lund, Sternberg Press, 2016), the first in a book series that I continue to co-edit (with 17 volumes to date). I am also co-editor (with Joasia Krysa) of the open access DATA browser book series published by Open Humanities Press which has published eight volumes, and 3 in production. In collaboration with transmediale festival for art and digital culture in Berlin, I co-run (with Christian Ulrik Andersen) a yearly research workshop/publication, and am co-editor of the associated open access online journal APRJA, published by Aarhus University, and hosted by The Royal Danish Library. Related to this is an ongoing research in experimental publishing (with Winnie Soon) and affective infrastructures (with Aarhus, UCL Slade, In-grid, Systerserver and Varia). Current projects also include "Ways of [Machine] Seeing", explored in a special issue of the journal AI & Society for Springer-Nature (co-edited with Mitra Azar and Leonardo Impett) published in 2021, and a public engagement project for 2022 (with Yasmine Boudiaf, Annie Davey) funded by The Alan Turing Institute, and with support form The Photographers' Gallery.
