Academic staff

I am an award-winning practitioner and educator with 25+ years of experience in film and television. I have worked with the BBC, ITV, Channel4, Nickelodeon, and Disney, earning multiple BAFTA and RTS credits. I am a passionate advocate of inclusivity. I am the Founder of Women in Screen and sit on the editorial board for Representology, The Journal of Media and Diversity. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Executive Board member of the National Association for Higher Education in the Moving Image, Royal Television Society London Board member and co-author of The TV Studio Production Handbook.

As Professor and Head of Film, I lead a dedicated team of academics and a range of courses from apprenticeships through to postgrad and the flagship BA in Film and Television Practice within the School of Arts and Creative industries. My expertise in film and television has led me to speak at prestigious events such as South by Southwest (SXSW), the BFI, the International Media Education Summit, ScreenSkills Congress and the British Council.

I am an active member of the screen industries and education sector, serving on several boards, committees and working groups such as Royal Television Society London, to bridge industry and education and the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) Subject Advisory Group to lead on the development of the new subject benchmark for Communication, Media, Film and Cultural Studies. Other recent positions include being the external expert for the validation of 17 MA Courses at the revered National Film and Television School (NFTS).

I am the Founder of Women in Screen, advocating for gender equity in the industry and convenor of the Trailblazing Women On and Off Screen conference, a forum, bringing scholars, industry practitioners and students together to amplify the voices of women. Additionally, I sit on the Editorial Board for Representology, The Journal of Media and Diversity, working with Sir Lenny Henry and the Centre for Media Diversity to promote inclusive practices and Chair NAHEMI's Media Education Diversity Group.

I am published by Bloomsbury Academic and Palgrave and my co-authored book The TV Studio Production Handbook is a core part of the media curriculum and can be found on university reading lists internationally and in library collections such as the British Library, the New York Public Library, and the National Library of China, contributing to shaping the education of future media practitioners.

My documentary on Thelma and Louise, exploring themes of friendship and sexual violence has screened at leading festivals across 6 continents, winning Best Short at Cine Paris, and the African International Smartphone Film Festival, and the Royal Society of Television and Motion Picture Award for Best Film by a Woman. I have also received Excellence in Education Awards for Innovation in Teaching, Excellence in Engagement: Business, Industry & the Professions and International Engagement and am the recipient of an International Lifetime Membership Award from the Asian Academy of Film and Television.
