I am a Professor of Diversity and Social Justice in the Adult Nursing Department of London South Bank University, with a background in public health and diversity in care. My research focuses on the interplay of gender, culture ethnicity and health. Since graduating from the University of Essex as an adult registered nurse, I have followed a clinical/academic career, remaining close to clinical nursing, particularly in the critical care environment.
I published a textbook in 2019 Introduction to Nursing for First Year Students, this textbook uses diverse cultural case studies to convey nursing. I successfully launched the Dame Elizabeth Anionwu Lecture for Inclusivity in Nursing and Midwifery and the Anionwu awards for Inclusivity in Nursing and Midwifery. My academic interests are in how health is theorized using social media platforms. I am published widely in nursing and social media and developing an area on the use of social media to enhance research literacy of nurses. I hold the Mary Seacole Prize for Leadership in Nursing 2014. My current work is funded by the European Centre of Excellence for Continuing Professional Development, developing a set of principles for nurses using social media in Europe. My most recent works include Knowledge, attitude and beliefs on sex among Black Africans; Psychosexual Experiences of FGM survivors and Experience of Stroke among Caribbean populations in the UK and the Caribbean. I am well recognised in the field and this can be seen in my esteem factors which include: Guest Editor 2022 for a special issue on Diversity and Social Justice in Nurse Education Today and Journal of Clinical Nursing on LGBTI Health 2017; the Mary Seacole Prize for Leadership in Nursing 2013/14 by the Royal College of Nursing, and various editorships including Evidence Based Nursing Journal and Journal of Transcultural Nursing. I collaborate nationally and internationally including working with teams in Trinidad, Jamaica and Australia. I publish widely in various nursing journals and have given keynote speeches and public seminars on Race and Health Inequities. I further serve the nursing community on various panels such as the Nursing Times Student Nurses awards; Edith Cavell Awards and Health Service Journal awards. A key objective of my programme of work is to reduce the gap in health equities through developing and improving cultural competence and intelligence.
My external activities includes steering group member of the Mary Seacole Awards; Editorial board member of the Journal of Clinical Nursing, External examiner to several universities, Chair of the Chief Nursing Officer (England) National Shared Professional Decision-making Council for Research. Member of the Council of Deans for Health Anti- Racist Policy group. I also hold membership of the European Transcultural Nursing Association, Chief Nursing Officer (England) BAME Strategic Advisory Group and Advisory Group Member for Young Migrants Health Project (Anglia Ruskin University Lead Dr Grace Spencer)
