Academic staff

I am an ARB-registered Architect and Urban Designer with over 7 years of professional experience working across a variety of schemes in the UK and China. This includes large housing-led and mixed-use developments, serviced apartments, specialist life-science laboratories, as well as urban regeneration, town-centre recovery, urban heritage, and public-realm projects.

I am keen to instil in my students a recognition of the ongoing role that architectural history and theory plays in the way in which we shape the built environment today. I am excited to explore the possibilities provided by integrating academia with practice.

My research interests are centred on the impact that the design of neighbourhoods and urban centres have on communities, social networks and mental health and wellbeing and the historic intersection between the built environment and social and political issues. This is informed by both my academic and professional experience. It is centred on the social and political nature of architecture across history. I have researched the complex relationship that England has with its imperial and industrial past and the dangers of a nostalgic approach to preservation. I have assessed the relationship between design and public policy. I was invited to co-present on Heritage-Led Regeneration at the Public Practice Autumn Forum. More recent research has explored the aspirations that informed post-war urban modernisation. I presented this research at the interdisciplinary ‘Modern Backdrop’ conference at Salford University.

I am experienced in assisting with collaborations between universities and private and public bodies. He recently facilitated a partnership between London South Bank University, Southwark Council and Historic England enabling Masters of Architecture students to be involved in a local Heritage Action Zone in Walworth. This included some of the students presenting the findings of their research at Historic England's offices to a range of heritage professionals.

I previously assisted in setting up a collaboration between Manchester School of Architecture and local practive HTA Design, co-leading a Housing Unit focusing on a range of topics including Age Friendly Housing, Co-Housing and masterplanning.

My Masters’ thesis proposal of a housing cooperative and adjacent community facilities set within a wider masterplan received a Distinction and was selected as one of three finalists for Manchester Society of Architects’ ‘Future Architect of the Year’ award.
