I am a Senior Lecturer in Building Services Engineering involved in teaching HNC/HND, BEng and MSc Building Services Engineering. I am also the academic chair for the Building Services Engineering Industrial Advisory Board (BSEIAB). Prior to undertaking this role, I was an Assistant Professor in Building Services Engineering/Building Physics at the University of Nottingham’s overseas campus in Ningbo China where I held various academic leadership roles as Course Director, Senior Tutor and the Director of Teaching and Learning. I also previously worked as a lecturer in Building Services/Building Technology and a Research Assistant respectively at Nottingham Trent University.

My research activities involve numerical and experimental investigations into fluids and thermal engineering systems, primarily focused on sustainable energy technologies. I specialize in adsorption systems for dehumidification and heat pipes for passive heat dissipation and thermal management. I welcome PhD candidates looking to work on topics in Thermofluids, Sustainable Energy Technologies and Building Services Engineering.

Energy Saving Materials and Technologies for Low Carbon Buildings

Efficient utilization of energy saving materials and technologies is essential for reducing energy consumption in buildings, which has important practical significance and economic value in net zero transition. In recent years, with the decrease of the cost and the improvement of the technologies, the popularization of thermal energy storage (TES) materials, Photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal technologies, and digital technologies play an important role in low carbon building design and development.

The current special issue aims at gathering and inspiring research contributions and review papers focusing on energy saving materials and technologies for low carbon buildings, and providing readers with ideas and methods for devising solutions to practical applications, which can also serve as the reference for the future research direction. For instance, solar thermal (ST) technology, solar photovoltaic (PV) technology and photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) technology are regarded as the most feasible renewable solutions for building applications. Ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) technology has been increasingly attracting attention as its environmentally friendly mechanism for space cooling and heating. Thermal energy storage (TES) technologies, including seasonal and short-term storage, are considered to be important in solving the problems of instability in renewable energy supply and the mismatching between energy demands and supplies. Phase change materials (PCMs), which are widely used in various thermal energy storage systems, are particularly attractive due to their high energy storage densities and stable phase change temperatures.

However, these technologies still need to overcome various limitations before they can be widely used in buildings. New material developments, integration technologies, mathematical simulation and control strategies are crucially important for promoting the applications of these new technologies.

The special issue aims to present new research findings, and new proven practices for reducing building energy needs and improving indoor environment quality. Review and research articles on practical, experimental, theoretical and simulation innovations are welcome.

The topics include, but are not limited to:

• Heat transfer in PCMs and enhancement techniques: phase change material, microencapsulated phase change material, characterization and development of new PCMs

• Renewable energy for buildings: geothermal, heat pump, PV, solar thermal technology, wind energy, biotechnologies

• Digital technologies in buildings: HVAC control systems, IoT technologies, digital technologies, occupant behaviors

• Building simulation

• Zero CO2 emission - zero energy and energy plus buildings

Special Issue "Energy Applications in Low-Carbon Buildings and Sustainable Cities"

Recent urbanisation, global warming, and the energy crisis have warranted an increased need for improvements in outdoor thermal comfort, building energy efficiency, and renewable energy utilisation in urban environments. Considering that more than half of the world's inhabitants live in cities, and the expected continuation of this trend, it is becoming ever more important to study how buildings and urban cities can be better planned to have positive impacts on energy efficiency and occupants' thermal comfort, both indoor and outdoor. It is also imperative that new methods and strategies for applications in buildings and urban regions be developed and implemented in built environments to optimise energy usage and occupant satisfaction. This Special Issue aims to provide selected contributions on new technologies, methods, and guidelines for application in buildings and urban regions in order to improve energy efficiency and occupant wellbeing.

Potential topics include:

Low-carbon technology applications and assessment in buildings;

The effect of urban morphology on energy efficiency;

Low-energy and low-carbon buildings;

The impacts of urban morphology on outdoor thermal comfort.
